Inhalt:	Umschlagtext: This is an introductory survey of the history and recent development of Latin American economy and society from Colonial times to the Cuban Revolution. In the first three sections Professor Furtado analyses the historical roots of the basic economic and social institutions which still prevail in Latin America; he describes the foundation of the national states and examines the impact of the industrial revolution. Sections 4 and 5 deal with the process of industrialization based on import substitution and the main obstacles to development in recent times. Sections 6 and 7 deal fully with the problems of foreign trade, external dependency and the movement towards regional integration. Section 8 surveys and assesses policies for structural reconstruction: agrarian reforms (with special reference to Mexico, Bolivia and areas characterized by the Latifundio-minifundio); planning and social modernization. A chapter is devoted to the economic aspects of the Cuban revolution. Throughout his study Professor Furtado describes the important contribution made by Latin American economists to such problems as structural inflation, planning in underdeveloped economies and the reorganization of the international economy.
